Kids birthday parties

2 04 2007

There was a discussion on The Catch Up just now about kids parties.  They were talking about a home party rather than a venue, and about how easy it is to have a party at a venue.

Here’s my view.  My 5 year old has a gluten intollerance and party venue’s don’t cater for him.  All the food has gluten in it, including lollies in the lolly bags.  For us, it’s easier and cheaper to do the party ourselves.

For Ns 5th birthday, we had a party at a park with a pirate ship.  We made a gluten free birthday cake in the shape of a pirate ship, and had lolly bags that had a chocolate frog as the only lolly!

When we go to other kids parties, we need to pack food for N to eat, including treats for cake.  And we need to look at the packets and containers for the ingredients!

There are many kids with food sensitivies - so it’s not just my family that goes through this.  I would love nothing more than to have a venue party for N, however it costs more and is more work for us to hire a venue, and then self cater, than it is to have a party at home.

it must be hard with a child with an intollerance like that - how do you manage with school etc?

With school, I pack his lunch :) He chooses the snacks he wants, usually “rice chips” (snakata rice biscuits), and fruit. There is gluten free bread for his lunch, and he’s really good at not having things with gluten in it. If I know there is going to be a party or something at school, I send along a gluten free treat for him. It’s not that hard once you know what to do :)

A lot of parents seem to be ‘afraid’ to have a party at home due to mess, lack of time & possibly imagination…..’”what do you do with a bunch of screaming kids for 2+ hours?”…….
It’s great to organise a party at home on your own, but if it’s too much, there are lots of party planners and entertainers who will come to you!
This is what gave me the inspiration to start GroovyGames. GroovyGames will come to where ever you are having your party, be it at home, community hall, beach, park….We come armed with heaps of games and equipment to keep any sized group of kids (or families) entertained and it’s totally interavtive and FUN.
Due to the exact reason you have said missieK we don’t, as a standard, supply lolly bags. However, we are more than happy to on request. We are also happy to put together a ‘GroovyGoody Bag’ that doesn’t have to include lollies of food stuffs at all….just Fun and Groovy party favors and trinkets.

HI

We had Jayden’s 3rd Birthday part on Saturday, and for the first time ever I found myself asking mums if their bub’s were allergic to something. It scared me actually to think this was the first time I had ever think to ask. Luckily none of them were.

I’m glad both my boys aren’t, although my nephew is highly allergic to eggs - luckily he’s getting better tolerance.

My kids have problems with gluten, dairy, salicylates, peanuts, preservatives, colourings, flavourings and additives. I must admit I hate it when my kids are invited to birthday parties as it generally means I spend more time in the kitchen than the hostess, especially if its at a party venue. Trying to create foods for my kids that have some resemblance to the colourful creations the other kids are eating is a nightmare. Luckily my 5-year old won’t go near anything that has dairy or gluten in it as he knows how sick it makes him. The two-year old is another story though!
